How to Become a Cosmetologist in Oklahoma

Cosmetology is a growing segment of the beauty industry and the economy overall. This fact draws a lot of people in and makes them want to pursue this path for a career. Many people pursue cosmetology as a career because it is a passion and they love working at a job that is creative. For these people the industry growth is just a bonus. Whichever boat you fall into, there are certain steps you have to follow to become a cosmetologist. The steps you have to take will vary depending on which state you live in. To become a cosmetologist in Oklahoma, this is what you’ll have to do: licensed cosmetologist holding blow dryer in a salon

Hours

To become a cosmetologist, most states require that you fulfill a certain amount of education and training. Cosmetology is a very comprehensive program that can cover many different topics and techniques when it comes to beauty. Although cosmetology is comprehensive, the hour requirement is usually much less time than it would take you to graduate from a traditional four year college. In the state of Oklahoma there is a 1500 hour requirement that must be fulfilled before you can get your cosmetology license. This means you could be done with school and working in the industry in as little as 50 weeks.

School

A beauty school with a cosmetology program is where you will go to fulfill the hours that are required by the state board. At Jenks Beauty College our cosmetology program not only offers the required hours to get your cosmetology license, but it is designed to give students the tools they need to build a career in the beauty industry. hair stylist working in salon While you are in cosmetology school you can learn a variety of topics like hair cutting and styling techniques, hair coloring, employee/employer relationship skills, client relationship skills, and effective communication. These skills can help you in many different areas of the industry, not just cutting and styling hair.

Exams

Another step in getting your cosmetology license in Oklahoma is taking the exams that the state requires. There are two exams or parts that you will have to take before getting your cosmetology license. The first is the written portion and the second is the practical exam.

Written Exam

The written exam portion is a 100 question test that will cover the following topics:
  • Sanitation, disinfection, and safety
  • Shampooing and conditioning hair
  • Haircutting and hair styling
  • Weaving and braid extensions
  • Chemical texture services
  • Haircoloring
  • Skin care
  • Nail care
  • Licensing and regulation

Practical Exam

The practical exam is more hands on and gives the students the opportunity to actually perform the services to show that they are competent and capable. The services that the practical exam covers are:
  • Pre-exam set up and disinfection
  • Manicure services
  • Facial service
  • Chemical services
  • No-base virgin relaxer
  • Bleach retouch
  • Shampoo service
  • Hair shaping service
  • Permanent waving service
  • Blow drying and thermal curling service
  • End of exam disinfection
Your time spent in cosmetology school is what can help prepare you to sit for these tests. The cosmetology program at Jenks covers a variety of topics that are in the exam. It can also provide students an opportunity to hone their practical skills in the student clinic. hairdresser cutting hair

Getting Licensed

Once you pass the exams, the next step is simple. You just have to fill out and send in an application to the state board and pay your application fee. Once the state board reviews your application and receives your exam scores, they will issue your license. Once you receive your license, it’s time to go find a job and start living the dream!

Building a Balanced Schedule

Life is busy. It’s a fact. If you are thinking about going to beauty school, it can be a tough decision. There are so many things to do in the tiny amount of time given in a day. Sometimes you may find yourself wishing that you didn’t have to sleep so you could get to the things that you didn’t have time to do. Adding school on top of everything else may seem like it’s too much, but here’s a few tips, tricks, and reasons why it may actually be a good idea.

A Brighter Future

One main reason that going to beauty school is a great idea, even if you already have a schedule that is busy, is that it can help you create a future that is more exciting and rewarding. Going to school can help you move from a job or career that you endure to something that you look forward to every day. Making this change can make your busy schedule feel not so busy after all.

Find Flexibility

The beauty industry is known for offering a lot of flexibility. There is flexibility of where you can work, what type of job you can pursue, as well as scheduling. Becoming a certified or licensed cosmetologists, for example, can open a lot of doors that can allow you to create a work schedule that is a good fit with the other obligations you may already have. Once you are licensed, you can look for employment opportunities that offer this flexibility and hopefully open up your schedule a little more than it is now.

Growth and Opportunity

In addition to offering flexibility, the beauty industry is also going through significant growth. The occupations of hairdressers and cosmetologists are growing at 10% according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is faster than average for all other occupations. The esthetics industry has even more dramatic growth at 12%. This means that there are and should continue to be a lot of opportunities in the beauty industry for you to pursue.

Another great characteristic of the beauty industry is that it can provide a lot of entrepreneurial opportunities. Those who have their cosmetology license, for example, could pursue the options of opening their own salon or spa. Many salon owners and even beauty school owners are people who once went to beauty school themselves. You may not have thought about beauty school as a place that produces entrepreneurs…but it is.

Becoming a Trend Setter

It’s true that the beauty industry has become home to many career changers who have families. It is important for parents to lead the way for their children by example. If you want your children to follow their dreams, pursue an education beyond high school, or have the guts to try their hand at starting their own business the best way to encourage them is to do it yourself. By going to school to learn what you love to do, you are showing your children that this is an important thing for them to do as well. They will likely see this and notice it. You will become the trendsetter in your family.

Beauty School Schedules

Another really convenient part of going to beauty school is the great class schedules that are offered. At Jenks Beauty College our programs are offered at different times to fit different schedules. This makes it possible for you to continue to do the things you need to do while building a better future.

Some of them may surprise you.

Protecting Your Skin and Hair For The Summer Season

Summer has finally rolled around! Sunshine, warmth, pool days, beach trips, and festivals are all here. The changing of the seasons brings great things, but it can be hard on your skin and hair. Increased exposure to heat, sun, salt, and chlorine can really do some damage. Even turning on the air conditioner can cause your skin and hair to dry out because in addition to cooling things off, it also dehumidifies the air quite a bit. So, what can you do this summer to protect your skin and hair? Here are some tips we have gathered to help you keep your skin and hair looking as beautiful, lush, soft, and smooth as possible:

Hair

Keeping skin and hair safe in summer
Everybody knows that you should protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun. But what about your hair? A lot of people don’t think about taking protective actions for their hair when they are going out to lay by the pool or play on the beach. Chlorine from pools, salt from the ocean, heat, and sunshine can all dehydrate and damage you hair, making it frizzy and unmanageable. There is a myriad of things you can do to protect you hair from the summer elements.

    1. Cover it up!– If you are planning on spending a lot of time out in the sun, wearing a hat is good idea. Hats help protect both your scalp and hair from the elements and will help keep it healthy.

Keeping skin and hair safe in summer

  1. Keep it up!– Put your hair in an updo, braids, or a messy bun instead of leaving it down and parting it. The bun helps trap moisture and also protects your scalp from burning where the part in your hair would normally be.
  2. Clean it up! (or not)– Shampooing your hair too much can be counter productive during the summertime. Your body produces oil for your hair naturally that will protect it from the sun. Instead of washing your hair with shampoo everyday, try using a cleansing conditioner or a dry shampoo a few times a week. Rotate between these different types of products to help your hair keep some of its natural oils.
  3. Smooth it out!– There are a lot of products out there that you should use to help keep your hair in amazing condition during the brutal summer months. There’s masks, leave in conditioners, dry shampoos, mists, and sprays that can all help rescue your hair from the summer elements. Research the variety of products out there and how they protect your hair from the sun and heat. Find ones that will work best for your hair and the conditions you live in.

Skin

The most obvious thing you can do to protect your skin from the sun is to apply sunscreen. But choosing the right sunscreen can be tricky because there are so many options. SPF stands for “sun protection factor” and refers to how much protection from the sun’s UV rays the sunscreen offers. Using a higher SPF sunscreen will provide better protection.

Keeping skin and hair safe in summer

Some other good things to do when using sunscreen is to apply it often. Sometimes the sunscreen won’t last very long because of water, sweat, or using a towel to dry off. Reapplying sunscreen every two hours is a good practice to adopt. Also, you need to give your sunscreen time to work. It takes at least 20 minutes to absorb into the skin and work effectively. Applying sunscreen with the other lotions or skin creams that you use on a daily basis already is a good way to make sure it soaks in and works well. It’s also important to be cautious when using a tanning bed. Just like the sun, tanning beds can burn your skin and cause a lot of damage.

In addition to using sunscreen, wearing clothes that effectively block the sun is a good way to protect your skin. Long sleeve shirts and pants that breathe well are a good choice. This will protect you from the rays of the sun, but still allow you to stay cool in the heat.

Now you’re ready to head out and enjoy the great weather! If you’re interested in learning more about how to make your hair and skin beautiful check out our cosmetology and esthetics programs. You can also contact us to learn more. Have a great summer!

Cosmetology: The Perfect Career for Moms

mother with daughter laughing in bed

Being a mom is a job in and of itself. Adding a full-time job to the equation seems nearly impossible. Between the soccer practices, theater rehearsals, and the dreaded parent/teacher conferences, where is the time for a career? We admire that moms always seem to put their children first, but we think it’s possible to have the best of both worlds. How, you ask? Cosmetology! A future in beauty could be the answer to your inner career debate. Here are some reasons why we think that cosmetology is the ideal career for moms.

Mom&Children

Flexibility

Who doesn’t love to choose their own schedule? Trying to fit in a 9-5 while being the glue of your family is not ideal for most women. As a cosmetologist, you can build your work schedule around your mom schedule.Cosmetology allows you to put what really matters first, and that’s your family! Never miss another ballet recital or family dinner again.
Beauty Industry

It’s a Growing Industry

The world of cosmetology is on a path of continual upward growth. It’s predicted that between 2012 and 2022, cosmetology jobs are expected to grow at 13%. Growth is something that one should always look for in a career choice. Without growth, your career could easily become stagnant and that isn’t something that anyone wants. With such high rates of growth and progress in the world of beauty, your career options are countless! The best parts are that there are cosmetology careers offered across the globe! Once your kiddos grow up and decide to attend college across the country, no problem! You can pack your bags and tag along. Is being an overbearing mama bear really a bad thing? Yeah right!

Adult Interactions

We aren’t saying that you don’t cherish each and every moment with your children because we know that’s not true. As an adult, though, as much as you enjoy the in-depth discussions of Dora The Explorer and nap time, it’s normal to crave adult interactions. In cosmetology, you get to mingle with various crowds ranging from CEOs to school teachers. You will get to meet all different types of people throughout your day! Each day will consist of new people and new conversations. Aw, just imagine the intriguing and mind growing conversations that are to be had. By the time your day comes to an end, you will actually look forward to an extensive, Scooby Doo convo.

You Become a Role Model for Your Kids

As a cosmetologist, you wear more than one hat and answer to more than one title. You are a saleswoman, an artist, a trendsetter, and not to mention, an entrepreneur. Your kids will learn that they can be anything they want to be if they put their minds to it! You can lead by example and become an inspirational figure for your children to look up to.

It’s Never Too Late to Start

More often than not, as a maternal instinct, moms choose to put themselves last and always place their family before them. They slowly push their goals further and further behind until they seem utterly unattainable. At that point, they are usually put away and forgotten. We have good news, though, there is no age limit in cosmetology. There is no timeline as to when you can become a cosmetologist.

“Even if you think the tentacles of security have already wrapped themselves around you and you can’t move because of your obligations, it’s never too late-there are always unlimited ways to follow your dreams, and it is much easier than you think.” – Rhonda Byrne

We know how intimidating starting something new can be. You owe it to yourself to follow your dreams, so don’t let fear of the unknown hold you back. As we mentioned before, we truly admire the dedication and hard work that goes into being a mother. That is why we offer flexible class schedules like night classes to accommodate your motherly obligations! If you want a way to express your creativity and you need flexibility, then check out our cosmetology program and see if a career in beauty is the right path for you!
