How to Become a Cosmetologist in Oklahoma

Cosmetology is a growing segment of the beauty industry and the economy overall. This fact draws a lot of people in and makes them want to pursue this path for a career. Many people pursue cosmetology as a career because it is a passion and they love working at a job that is creative. For these people the industry growth is just a bonus. Whichever boat you fall into, there are certain steps you have to follow to become a cosmetologist. The steps you have to take will vary depending on which state you live in. To become a cosmetologist in Oklahoma, this is what you’ll have to do:

Hours

To become a cosmetologist, most states require that you fulfill a certain amount of education and training. Cosmetology is a very comprehensive program that can cover many different topics and techniques when it comes to beauty. Although cosmetology is comprehensive, the hour requirement is usually much less time than it would take you to graduate from a traditional four year college. In the state of Oklahoma there is a 1500 hour requirement that must be fulfilled before you can get your cosmetology license. This means you could be done with school and working in the industry in as little as 50 weeks.

School

A beauty school with a cosmetology program is where you will go to fulfill the hours that are required by the state board. At Jenks Beauty College our cosmetology program not only offers the required hours to get your cosmetology license, but it is designed to give students the tools they need to build a career in the beauty industry.

While you are in cosmetology school you can learn a variety of topics like hair cutting and styling techniques, hair coloring, employee/employer relationship skills, client relationship skills, and effective communication. These skills can help you in many different areas of the industry, not just cutting and styling hair.

Exams

Another step in getting your cosmetology license in Oklahoma is taking the exams that the state requires. There are two exams or parts that you will have to take before getting your cosmetology license. The first is the written portion and the second is the practical exam.

Written Exam

The written exam portion is a 100 question test that will cover the following topics:

Sanitation, disinfection, and safety
Shampooing and conditioning hair
Haircutting and hair styling
Weaving and braid extensions
Chemical texture services
Haircoloring
Skin care
Nail care
Licensing and regulation

Practical Exam

The practical exam is more hands on and gives the students the opportunity to actually perform the services to show that they are competent and capable. The services that the practical exam covers are:

Pre-exam set up and disinfection
Manicure services
Facial service
Chemical services
No-base virgin relaxer
Bleach retouch
Shampoo service
Hair shaping service
Permanent waving service
Blow drying and thermal curling service
End of exam disinfection

Getting Licensed

Once you pass the exams, the next step is simple. You just have to fill out and send in an application to the state board and pay your application fee. Food That Makes Your Skin Glow

“You are what you eat,” as they say. This can be true when it comes to your skin at least. Depending on what some of your main dietary staples are, you could either be helping your skin glow or making your skin dull. Here are some foods that affect the health of your skin. Some of them may surprise you.

Chocolate?

That’s right. Chocolate can really change the way your skin looks and feels. The cocoa has properties that are good for your skin. You may have seen or used lotions and creams that have cocoa in them. Eating a little bit of chocolate can help too. Eat a few squares of dark chocolate and it may help brighten your skin.

A Spoonful of Yogurt

Dairy has a lot of proteins that make your skin stronger and more resistant to wrinkling. Some doctors say that Greek yogurt is especially rich in proteins that help your skin remain wrinkle-free. Eating a serving of Greek yogurt every day could keep the wrinkles away.

Magic Pomegranates

Pomegranates are a fruit that can help your skin look more colorful by increasing the blood flow. The antioxidants help your circulatory system work to help the complexion of your skin shine a little brighter.

Bored?

If eating is something you do when you’re bored, sunflower seeds are a great fix. They are also packed with vitamin E which helps protect your skin from harmful elements, namely sunshine. So next time you’re bored and start to get snacky, grab a bag of seeds. It can help curb your appetite AND save your skin.

Strawberry

Yep. Strawberries are good for you skin too, and thank goodness. Nobody complains about having to eat strawberries. They are rich in vitamin C which helps keep your skin hydrated, so your skin will be feeling soft, smooth, and moist.

Kidney Beans

If acne is a problem for you, eat some kidney beans. They have a lot of zinc in them which has been said to help a lot with clearing up unwanted blemishes and zits. Many acne creams have zinc as an ingredient and adding to your diet by eating some kidney beans could help as well.

Olive Oil

This stuff is versatile when it comes to helping skin. You can add it to your diet as well as apply it topically. If you have parched lips or rough elbows you can apply some olive oil to make them shine! Also, complimenting your next meal with a little olive oil can help heal your skin from the inside out.

Pell Grants: What You Need to Know

Intimidated by financial aid? Don’t worry. We’re here to help. Here’s what you need to know about Pell Grants and how to apply for them.

Jenks Beauty College offers financial aid to those who qualify.

What is a Pell Grant?

Pell Grants are a form of federal aid that do not have to be repaid (see exceptions here). Pell Grants are given to undergraduate students and those who are expanding their education by enrolling in a teacher training program.

That means, at Jenks Beauty College, only students who qualify in our Cosmetology and Instructor programs may receive a grant.

The money you can receive from a Pell Grant varies by year. This year, there has been a change in how much a qualifying student can receive.

Updated Pell Grant Information

This award year, (July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018), eligible students can receive 150 percent of their Federal Pell Grant Scheduled Award. In order to qualify for these additional funds, you must already qualify for Pell Grants for the year, and you must be enrolled in at least part time courses.

How to Apply

First start off by submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®). You can start your application by clicking here.

What You Will Need to Apply

Create an FSA ID. This is the username and password that you will use to apply.
Documentation including: your social security number (SSN), your driver’s license, federal tax returns, any other information about income.

Protecting Your Skin and Hair For The Summer Season

Summer has finally rolled around! Sunshine, warmth, pool days, beach trips, and festivals are all here. The changing of the seasons brings great things, but it can be hard on your skin and hair. Increased exposure to heat, sun, salt, and chlorine can really do some damage. Even turning on the air conditioner can cause your skin and hair to dry out because in addition to cooling things off, it also dehumidifies the air quite a bit. So, what can you do this summer to protect your skin and hair? Here are some tips we have gathered to help you keep your skin and hair looking as beautiful, lush, soft, and smooth as possible:

Hair

Everybody knows that you should protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun. But what about your hair? A lot of people don’t think about taking protective actions for their hair when they are going out to lay by the pool or play on the beach. Chlorine from pools, salt from the ocean, heat, and sunshine can all dehydrate and damage you hair, making it frizzy and unmanageable. There is a myriad of things you can do to protect you hair from the summer elements.

1. Cover it up!– If you are planning on spending a lot of time out in the sun, wearing a hat is good idea. Hats help protect both your scalp and hair from the elements and will help keep it healthy.

Keep it up!– Put your hair in an updo, braids, or a messy bun instead of leaving it down and parting it. The bun helps trap moisture and also protects your scalp from burning where the part in your hair would normally be.
Clean it up! (or not)– Shampooing your hair too much can be counter productive during the summertime. Your body produces oil for your hair naturally that will protect it from the sun. Instead of washing your hair with shampoo everyday, try using a cleansing conditioner or a dry shampoo a few times a week. Rotate between these different types of products to help your hair keep some of its natural oils.
Smooth it out!– There are a lot of products out there that you should use to help keep your hair in amazing condition during the brutal summer months. There’s masks, leave in conditioners, dry shampoos, mists, and sprays that can all help rescue your hair from the summer elements. Research the variety of products out there and how they protect your hair from the sun and heat. Find ones that will work best for your hair and the conditions you live in.

Skin

The most obvious thing you can do to protect your skin from the sun is to apply sunscreen. But choosing the right sunscreen can be tricky because there are so many options. SPF stands for “sun protection factor” and refers to how much protection from the sun’s UV rays the sunscreen offers. Using a higher SPF sunscreen will provide better protection.

Some other good things to do when using sunscreen is to apply it often. Sometimes the sunscreen won’t last very long because of water, sweat, or using a towel to dry off. Reapplying sunscreen every two hours is a good practice to adopt. Also, you need to give your sunscreen time to work. It takes at least 20 minutes to absorb into the skin and work effectively. Applying sunscreen with the other lotions or skin creams that you use on a daily basis already is a good way to make sure it soaks in and works well. It’s also important to be cautious when using a tanning bed. Just like the sun, tanning beds can burn your skin and cause a lot of damage.

In addition to using sunscreen, wearing clothes that effectively block the sun is a good way to protect your skin. Long sleeve shirts and pants that breathe well are a good choice. This will protect you from the rays of the sun, but still allow you to stay cool in the heat.
