Food That Makes Your Skin Glow

“You are what you eat,” as they say. This can be true when it comes to your skin at least. Depending on what some of your main dietary staples are, you could either be helping your skin glow or making your skin dull. Here are some foods that affect the health of your skin. Some of them may surprise you.

Chocolate?

That’s right. Chocolate can really change the way your skin looks and feels. The cocoa has properties that are good for your skin. You may have seen or used lotions and creams that have cocoa in them. Eating a little bit of chocolate can help too. Eat a few squares of dark chocolate and it may help brighten your skin.

A Spoonful of Yogurt

Dairy has a lot of proteins that make your skin stronger and more resistant to wrinkling. Some doctors say that Greek yogurt is especially rich in proteins that help your skin remain wrinkle-free. Eating a serving of Greek yogurt every day could keep the wrinkles away.

Magic Pomegranates

Pomegranates are a fruit that can help your skin look more colorful by increasing the blood flow. The antioxidants help your circulatory system work to help the complexion of your skin shine a little brighter.

Bored?

If eating is something you do when you’re bored, sunflower seeds are a great fix. They are also packed with vitamin E which helps protect your skin from harmful elements, namely sunshine. So next time you’re bored and start to get snacky, grab a bag of seeds. It can help curb your appetite AND save your skin.

Yep. Strawberries are good for you skin too, and thank goodness. Nobody complains about having to eat strawberries. They are rich in vitamin C which helps keep your skin hydrated, so your skin will be feeling soft, smooth, and moist.

Kidney Beans

If acne is a problem for you, eat some kidney beans. They have a lot of zinc in them which has been said to help a lot with clearing up unwanted blemishes and zits. Many acne creams have zinc as an ingredient and adding to your diet by eating some kidney beans could help as well.

Olive Oil

This stuff is versatile when it comes to helping skin. You can add it to your diet as well as apply it topically. If you have parched lips or rough elbows you can apply some olive oil to make them shine! Also, complimenting your next meal with a little olive oil can help heal your skin from the inside out.

Pell Grants: What You Need to Know

Intimidated by financial aid? Don’t worry. We’re here to help. Here’s what you need to know about Pell Grants and how to apply for them.

Jenks Beauty College offers financial aid to those who qualify.

What is a Pell Grant?

Pell Grants are a form of federal aid that do not have to be repaid (see exceptions here). Pell Grants are given to undergraduate students and those who are expanding their education by enrolling in a teacher training program.

That means, at Jenks Beauty College, only students who qualify in our Cosmetology and Instructor programs may receive a grant.

The money you can receive from a Pell Grant varies by year. This year, there has been a change in how much a qualifying student can receive.

Updated Pell Grant Information

This award year, (July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018), eligible students can receive 150 percent of their Federal Pell Grant Scheduled Award. In order to qualify for these additional funds, you must already qualify for Pell Grants for the year, and you must be enrolled in at least part time courses.

How to Apply

First start off by submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®). You can start your application by clicking here.

What You Will Need to Apply

  1. Create an FSA ID. This is the username and password that you will use to apply.
  2. Documentation including: your social security number (SSN), your driver’s license, federal tax returns, any other information about income.

Why Should You Apply for Financial Aid?

Your Journey Through Cosmetology School

So, you’ve decided to go to cosmetology school, and you are a little curious about what your next year is going to look like as a student. Surely you have read all the technical descriptions you could find about what you’ll learn in the classroom and what it’s like on the floor, but we have a hunch that if you talked to a cosmetology student, they will describe their journey as much more than technicalities. That being said, we have broken down the rollercoaster of feelings, emotions, and thoughts that you’ll ride through during your time as a cosmo student. So, put on your seatbelt and prepare for a ride through twelve months of cosmetology school.

Month one


Starting something new is always nerve racking and even a little scary sometimes. But don’t let that hold you back from jumping right into cosmetology school and giving it your all. We know that it’s hard not to have some preconceived notions when the constant thought of starting school trumps most of your other thoughts. It’s okay to have those notions but it’s important to keep an open mind and acknowledge the fact that everything may not be exactly how you imagined. Embrace change, accept the new and adapt to the unknown. After all, this is what you’ve been waiting your whole life to do!

Month two


Take a deep breath and know that you can do this. Now that you have some weeks under your belt, you should realize that by now that you have the skills it takes to become a cosmetologist! Like we said before, we know that starting something new can be scary sometimes you may even feel a little unsure if you’ve even made the right choice. Trust in yourself and remember that you made this choice for a reason and it is the right choice!

Month three


By now, some things may still be a little fresh, but one thing is for sure and that is the realization that you are starting to make some amazing new friends. In the Jenks cosmetology program, you are going to be spending anywhere between 23 and 30 hours a week with your classmates. It’s no secret that you are going to build some amazing friendships in that time. You will watch each other grow, support one another’s dreams, and help each other when you run into a roadblock. You may lose touch with some after graduation but some of them may turn into lifelong friends.

Month four


By the time month four rolls around, you’re feeling pretty good about the talent you’ve perfected and the new skills that you have learned. Then, you hear that your time has come to start taking clients on the floor. Suddenly, all of that newfound confidence dwindles and you start to question if you’re really ready for the floor. Good news, your excitement will most likely overtake that fear, and you’ll walk on the floor like you own the place.

Month five


Now that you’ve adjusted to being on the floor, you are absolutely loving it. You get to practice the skills you’ve learned with real-world clients and still continue to obtain more knowledge. With the help of your instructors and your guests, you will learn ways to enhance your technical cutting, coloring and styling techniques. You’ll start to express your creativity through your services and personalize each of your guest’s experiences. The more you continue to learn the more confidence that you build within yourself. You can finally rid your mind of those pesky thoughts of not being ready to be on the floor. We’ve already established that change and progress can be scary but be sure to keep your mind filled with positive thoughts and reassure yourself that you can do anything you set your mind to!

Month six


Now that you have had the opportunity to be on the floor for a while, you’ve probably built some great relationships with your guests. You’ve maybe even had the privilege of returning guests that pre-book or specifically request to see you. Isn’t it a great feeling knowing that you provided such an amazing service to your guests that they want to see you again? Your guests are what make everything you do so worthwhile. Something most cosmetologists have in common is their internal desire to make others feel beautiful and you have definitely chosen a wonderful career to do just that. Maya Angelou once said,

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Be sure to keep that in mind when you have new and even returning guests in your chair.

Month Seven


You’ve been in school a while now and you’ve been presented with the endless paths that your career could take. Appreciate that! You’ve chosen a career that opens so many doors for your future. From makeup artistry and hair coloring to salon ownership and so much more, you have the power to choose what is right for YOU. Modern Salon wrote a great article that discusses some career opportunities for cosmetologists and it’s important to use resources like this and consider all of your possibilities before you set your mind to just one!

Month Eight


Wow, you’ve made it 8 months already, can you believe it? Time really does fly when you’re having fun. You’ve covered most of the basics by this point and now you are really focusing on perfecting your skills. The last few months are going to fly by so be careful what you wish for. Before you know it, you are going to be signing up for your state board practicals!

Month Nine


Just when you think you know it all, you still have more to learn! It’s easy to get overly confident in your abilities, but it’s important to remember that learning should never stop. The minute you decide you know everything is the minute your talent goes dormant. Always keep your mind open to new things and take a minute to appreciate your cosmetology school education.

Month Ten


It’s finally starting to sink in that you get to do this for the rest of your life! How awesome is that? You get to make a career out of your passion. The thought of all your possibilities will probably give you butterflies every now and again. Get used to it because this is your life!

Month Eleven


You know that terrible feeling you get towards the end of your senior year of high school? You are probably starting to feel the same thing now that you are just weeks away from graduating cosmetology school. We don’t care what the medical journals have to say, Senioritis is a real thing. Symptoms may include: daydreaming of your future in the world of beauty, imagining the amazing feeling you’ll get when you ace your boards, and reflecting on all you’ve learned. It also features a strong urge to fast forward time to graduation. You have to hang in there, though. Graduation is just around the corner, and it’ll be here before you know it.

Month Twelve


What did we tell you? Graduation is finally here, you did it! Take a moment and pat yourself and your fellow graduates on the back. No one ever said that it would be easy, but it is worth it! Now that you are done, and you’ve taken the appropriate time to celebrate this momentous achievement, it is time to start thinking about your boards. Study, study, study! Once you pass the necessary tests and obtain your official license, it’s finally time to start the next chapter of your life as a professional cosmetologist. Congratulations!

2017 Resolutions: Better Hair & Skin

With 2017 upon us, it’s always a great time to start thinking of ways to improve your beauty routine. If your hair and skin have a good year, so will you! So, we have some must-do resolutions to make your hair and skin happy this new year.

Lay Off The Heat

Please, your hair is begging you: stop with blow dryers, flat irons, and curling irons! Make 2017 the year that you go a little more natural.

Take Your Makeup Off At Night

We understand that by the time 10 o’clock rolls around, the last thing you want to do is spend another 15 minutes a skin regimen. But listen, you can skip the 4-step regimen and simply use some makeup removing wipes. That way, you spend a quick 60 seconds removing your makeup and your skin is happy and so is your sleep schedule.

Get Regular Trims

It’s rumored by many that if you get your hair cut more often, it will grow faster. FALSE! Although regular trims don’t actually make your hair grow faster, what they can do is rid your ends of any splits or damage alleviating breakage. So, get your butt into a salon at least every five weeks and keep those ends looking healthy. You’ll be thanking us this time next year when you’ve finally accomplished the length you’ve been working towards.

Drink More Water

Remember when your mother would always tell you to drink more water? Well, she was right. Water can remove toxins from your body which can result is healthier skin and hair! So the next time you feel like your skin or hair is dry, take that as a sign to make the resolution to drink more water!

The Beauty Industry

The industry is booming. We are grateful that we live in a time that we can pursue our passions and make a living. We think it is amazing how much you can accomplish in 2016 as a hairstylist, hair colorist, hair designer, makeup artist, or any other beauty professional who works hard. The industry has grown so much, especially for cosmetologists, barbers, and hairdressers, and it only continues to grow!

Trends

It might seem silly to say that we would like to give thanks to this year’s trends, but we really are. Without hair and fashion trends, our ability to be creative in our careers would be limited. We want to thank grey hair, cotton candy colored hair, highlighter, and cut creases for making a statement this year.

Makeup Artistry

This year, we’ve seen makeup artistry flourish as a highly-respected profession. We want to acknowledge the fact that makeup artistry is, in fact, an art. You have to take the time to learn the craft well. We love makeup artists! We also love all the different makeup items that have hit the shelves this year, from rainbow highlighter to unicorn brushes.

Our Community

The Oklahoma community is an amazing place. We want to recognize them as a part of our success. Our students have the opportunity to practice on real clients because our community allows them to! Love Your Skin! Skincare Tips to Make You Shine!

At Jenks Beauty College, we love the skin we’re in! Our esthetics students are here to learn how to make their clients feel the same way. That’s why we’ve partnered with skincare leader Dermalogica. We know that, at every age, skin problems can be a burden. Here are a few things you can do for your skin at any age.

For every age, skin needs a good SPF, exfoliation, a good cleanser for your skin type, and you need to drink lots of water. These rules will reign true for each of these age groups!

Teens to Late 20s

Remember to wash your face. It may seem trivial, but washing your face twice in a day, once in the morning and once at night, will help keep oiliness at bay.
Hands off. Avoid touching or picking at your face. This can clog pores and create acne.
Avoid a diet that is high in sugar. Sugar causes bacterial growth on your skin, resulting in acne.
Find an esthetician that can help you achieve your goals.

Late 20s to Late 30s

Moisturize. The sun isn’t the only part of mother nature that can wear your skin down. Protect your skin from a variety of other environmental factors by using a moisturizer.
Start adding anti-aging products into your routine.
If you don’t have one already, get yourself an esthetician you can trust. They can help you get the right products and treatments for your skin.

Early 40s to Late 50s

Create your own skincare routine. Every age requires a new skincare routine. Your skin is growing and changing just like you. Your needs in your 20s will differ from the needs in your 30s. Make sure to find a product that fits you. As we’ve mentioned before, find an esthetician who can help you make the right skincare decisions.
Collagen. Keep your skin supple and wrinkle free by adding a moisturizer with collagen to your routine.
Focus on your under-eye area. The skin under your eyes is delicate. Find a product that will help you keep that area moisturized and firm.

Late 50s and Above

Antioxidant rich moisturizers and eye creams. This will help keep down inflammation.
Add a retinoid to your nighttime routine. Retinoids help pores become smaller. They also boost collagen.
Moisture! Finding a moisturizer that is also an SPF is a bonus!

There are several products you can purchase to help accomplish the skincare goals you want, but there are also a few DIY options out there, too! The holiday season is almost in full swing. There are many opportunities to give and receive gifts from family and friends, but have you given back to your local community yet? Jenks and Tulsa have several volunteer and charity events happening throughout the months of November and December. Get ready to fill other’s hearts with joy (and yours too)! Here are a few of the events you can participate in:

Bell Ringing in Tulsa

Interested in raising money for The Salvation Army and The Boys & Girls Club of Metro Tulsa? Volunteer to become a bell ringer on Saturdays from November 17-December 24. The donations go to the surrounding Tulsa community. See more information about volunteering here.

Christmas for Kids

Help sort and organize gifts for kids in the Tulsa foster care system. This volunteer opportunity is hosted by OKDHS Christmas for Kids Program. This event starts on December 2 and goes until the 21st. Ready to make a difference in a child’s life? Volunteer here.

Reading Partner

From now until May of 2017, you can help Tulsa Legacy Charter School students learn to read at their grade level. As a volunteer, you could be a part of a child’s learning foundation. See their volunteer page for more info on signing up.

Hospice Friend

Assist terminally ill patients by being a companion. Rivercross Hospice is looking for volunteers in Tulsa to spend time with patients doing things like reading aloud, running errands, making phone calls, and doing household chores. You can also help them do fun activities like painting their nails and writing letters. Find out how to sign up and integrate this event into your schedule by checking out their volunteer page.

Foster an Animal

Animals in Tulsa are looking for couches to sleep on! ARF’s German Shepherd Rescue and Dooert.com are looking for loving homes to house foster animals. See how you can be a part of this great opportunity in Tulsa.

Hospice Volunteer

Miller Hospice is on the hunt for loving volunteers who can assist end-of-life patients and families with everyday tasks and events. If you want to help a Tulsa family handle the stress of end-of-life care, this might be the perfect match. See their event page to sign up.
