So, you’ve decided to go to cosmetology school, and you are a little curious about what your next year is going to look like as a student. Surely you have read all the technical descriptions you could find about what you’ll learn in the classroom and what it’s like on the floor, but we have a hunch that if you talked to a cosmetology student, they will describe their journey as much more than technicalities. That being said, we have broken down the rollercoaster of feelings, emotions, and thoughts that you’ll ride through during your time as a cosmo student. So, put on your seatbelt and prepare for a ride through twelve months of cosmetology school.
Month one
Starting something new is always nerve racking and even a little scary sometimes. But don’t let that hold you back from jumping right into cosmetology school and giving it your all. We know that it’s hard not to have some preconceived notions when the constant thought of starting school trumps most of your other thoughts. It’s okay to have those notions but it’s important to keep an open mind and acknowledge the fact that everything may not be exactly how you imagined. Embrace change, accept the new and adapt to the unknown. After all, this is what you’ve been waiting your whole life to do! ____________________
Month two
Take a deep breath and know that you can do this. Now that you have some weeks under your belt, you should realize that by now that you have the skills it takes to become a cosmetologist! Like we said before, we know that starting something new can be scary sometimes you may even feel a little unsure if you’ve even made the right choice. Trust in yourself and remember that you made this choice for a reason and it is the right choice! ____________________
Month three
By now, some things may still be a little fresh, but one thing is for sure and that is the realization that you are starting to make some amazing new friends. In the Jenks cosmetology program, you are going to be spending anywhere between 23 and 30 hours a week with your classmates. It’s no secret that you are going to build some amazing friendships in that time. You will watch each other grow, support one another’s dreams, and help each other when you run into a roadblock. You may lose touch with some after graduation but some of them may turn into lifelong friends. ____________________
Month four
By the time month four rolls around, you’re feeling pretty good about the talent you’ve perfected and the new skills that you have learned. Then, you hear that your time has come to start taking clients on the floor. Suddenly, all of that newfound confidence dwindles and you start to question if you’re really ready for the floor. Good news, your excitement will most likely overtake that fear, and you’ll walk on the floor like you own the place. ____________________
Month five
Now that you’ve adjusted to being on the floor, you are absolutely loving it. You get to practice the skills you’ve learned with real-world clients and still continue to obtain more knowledge. With the help of your instructors and your guests, you will learn ways to enhance your technical cutting, coloring and styling techniques. You’ll start to express your creativity through your services and personalize each of your guest’s experiences. The more you continue to learn the more confidence that you build within yourself. You can finally rid your mind of those pesky thoughts of not being ready to be on the floor. We’ve already established that change and progress can be scary but be sure to keep your mind filled with positive thoughts and reassure yourself that you can do anything you set your mind to! ____________________
Month six
Now that you have had the opportunity to be on the floor for a while, you’ve probably built some great relationships with your guests. You’ve maybe even had the privilege of returning guests that pre-book or specifically request to see you. Isn’t it a great feeling knowing that you provided such an amazing service to your guests that they want to see you again? Your guests are what make everything you do so worthwhile. Something most cosmetologists have in common is their internal desire to make others feel beautiful and you have definitely chosen a wonderful career to do just that. Maya Angelou once said,
“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
Be sure to keep that in mind when you have new and even returning guests in your chair. ____________________
Month Seven
You’ve been in school a while now and you’ve been presented with the endless paths that your career could take. Appreciate that! You’ve chosen a career that opens so many doors for your future. From makeup artistry and hair coloring to salon ownership and so much more, you have the power to choose what is right for YOU. Month Eight
Wow, you’ve made it 8 months already, can you believe it? Time really does fly when you’re having fun. You’ve covered most of the basics by this point and now you are really focusing on perfecting your skills. The last few months are going to fly by so be careful what you wish for. Before you know it, you are going to be signing up for your state board practicals! ____________________
Month Nine
Just when you think you know it all, you still have more to learn! It’s easy to get overly confident in your abilities, but it’s important to remember that learning should never stop. The minute you decide you know everything is the minute your talent goes dormant. Always keep your mind open to new things and take a minute to appreciate your cosmetology school education. ____________________
Month Ten
It’s finally starting to sink in that you get to do this for the rest of your life! How awesome is that? You get to make a career out of your passion. The thought of all your possibilities will probably give you butterflies every now and again. Get used to it because this is your life! ____________________
Month Eleven
You know that terrible feeling you get towards the end of your senior year of high school? You are probably starting to feel the same thing now that you are just weeks away from graduating cosmetology school. We don’t care what the medical journals have to say, Senioritis is a real thing. Symptoms may include: daydreaming of your future in the world of beauty, imagining the amazing feeling you’ll get when you ace your boards, and reflecting on all you’ve learned. It also features a strong urge to fast forward time to graduation. You have to hang in there, though. Graduation is just around the corner, and it’ll be here before you know it. ____________________
Month Twelve
What did we tell you? Graduation is finally here, you did it! Take a moment and pat yourself and your fellow graduates on the back. No one ever said that it would be easy, but it is worth it! Now that you are done, and you’ve taken the appropriate time to celebrate this momentous achievement, it is time to start thinking about your boards. Study, study, study! Once you pass the necessary tests and obtain your official license, it’s finally time to start the next chapter of your life as a professional cosmetologist. Congratulations! _____

Jonathan Leake is a Master Instructor at Jenks Beauty College. Jonathan started his career in cosmetology in 2006 assisting his favorite Cosmetologist in the Tulsa area, He has since found great joy and passion in passing along his knowledge he has gained over the years to new up and coming professionals who have decided to enter this wonderful career.
Rachel is a Master Instructor in Cosmetology. Between holding her Manicuring and Cosmetology licenses she has been in the industry for 10 years. Rachel’s career was built at Smart Style over the last 6 years with 5 of those as a Salon Manager.
Her love for teaching began at a young age which resulted in her tutoring in High School as well as teaching the children at church. Rachel’s goal in teaching is to prepare the students not only to pass their State Boards but to also prepare them for what the real world salon environment requires. She wants to make then classroom an fun environment so that the students are excited to come learn each day.
When not in the classroom she is busy in the salon trying to schedule clients in over a few days. She also does hair at a nursing home in whatever is left of her free time not spent with my boyfriend.
Katie is a master instructor for the Esthetics program as well as a JBC graduate and alumna. In class, Katie believes learning the fundamentals and foundations of esthetics is key in not only passing your state board exam, but going out into the workforce with confidence. She is dedicated to teaching her students all that is necessary to know in order to become an educated and successful skin therapist. She likes to motivate her students by providing a fun and unique learning experience. When you’re having a bad day, class is the best place to be!

Katie is a Licensed Skin Therapist and business owner in the esthetics field. She is passionate about helping her clients and students. When she isn’t at school or her spa, she enjoys having movie nights and exploring with her 3 boys.

Sabrina Maynard is a Financial Aid Specialist at Jenks Beauty College. Prior to joining the team of Jenks Beauty College in 2021, she was a Financial Aid Specialist at a previous college and has 8 years of experience in financial aid. She received her Master’s Degree in School Administration from Northeastern State University. She has a passion for education and takes great pride in assisting others with pursuing a higher education. Sabrina enjoys spending time with her family, camping, going to concerts and traveling.
My name is Akia Wagoner. I started doing hair at the age of 13. I knew what I wanted to do by the age of 18 when I graduated from high school I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the cosmetology field. I thought I was going to be a make-up artist but once I started doing hair I truly fell in love. I graduated from Owasso Beauty College in 1993 went back in 1994 and got my instructor’s license. My father converted his garage into a salon rest in peace Big Daddy Johnnie Ball. So I have been a self-employed business owner for 29 years of Akia‘s house of styles. My story is truly a blessing from God.
Christopher T. Westmoreland is the Registrar for the Jenks Beauty College. Prior to joining the team at Jenks Beauty College Christopher worked for the Veterans Administration and Northeastern State University. This has given him an insight into higher education and the college experience.
His experiences at both the Veterans administration and Northeastern State University has given him experiences in Advising, Research, Career Services, and Financial Aid.
Christopher is married with a daughter, is a published author, and has a Bachelor Degree in English Literature with a focus in Creative Writing which was obtained from Northeastern State University. He enjoys reading, playing Dungeons and Dragons, and taking time to enjoy the little things.
Jamison White is a master educator with 25 years’ experience. He hold two master instructor licenses in Barbering and Cosmetology. He has worked as a mentor, Salon Manager and stylist behind the chair. He also specializes in hair restoration as he was a salon supervisor for Hairclub for 5 years. He is very passionate about teaching students and sharing his experience to provide them with a more in depth learning curriculum.
Brooklyn is a Licensed Esthetician and Esthetician Instructor. After attending Jenks Beauty College as a student, she’s thrilled to be able to return as an instructor and instill the skills and knowledge to current students that was imparted on her. Her passion and the willingness to learn new things in the ever-changing field of Esthetics is what drives her to be a better Esthetician and instructor for her student body.

In her free time, she likes spending time with her husband and son, and playing with makeup.
My name is Kara, I am a master instructor, I have been in the cosmetology industry since 2015. I enjoy watching the students embrace and develop a passion for the industry. When I’m not at work I enjoy spending time with my son and friends. I also really enjoy being at the lake. My name is Reggie Jones, and I am the customer relations specialist here at Jenks Beauty College. I enjoy dancing, hanging out with family and friends, and spending time with my dog. I love helping people, and I am excited to meet and assist any customers in need!
I am a manicurist/nail technician instructor. I enjoy teaching the different design and structures of the body. The amazing part of it all is seeing the ideas of each individual in the beginning of their journey manifest by the end of the course.

Karlette Morrison is the Jenks Beauty College Nail Technology Department Head, that holds a CND Grand Master Certification, who educates students on the fundamentals of Nail Technology, as well as current nail trends and the standards of Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering. Karlette has been in the Nail Technology industry for 15+ years and is a licensed Nail Tech working in a prominent Tulsa salon where she had the privilege of taking care of two reigning Miss Oklahoma title holders.
What Karlette enjoys most about teaching is helping students learn the building blocks needed to pass their state board exam and be the best version of themselves professionally. Preparing students with conscious knowledge, of safe product usage and proper sanitation for their career is her passion. Current Nail Art Trends and engaging new students in theory is among her favorite things about being in the classroom. Karlette looks forward to becoming a mentor as well as instructor to the next generation of Nail Technicians. When Karlette is not teaching she enjoys spending time with her family, attending various concerts, and continuing Nail Tech education events.

Brittany Lawton is our OPI certified Nail Technology instructor and Department Head. She is a licensed cosmetologist who loves helping people become passionate about nails. Brittany enjoys making her class fun, challenging, and exciting daily for her students and is outside of the box thinker who likes to break the barriers of normal nails. Her students are encouraged to do things that they can’t do until it becomes something they can!
Ronald (Ronnie) Carlson is Owner and President of Jenks Beauty College. Prior to joining the team of Jenks Beauty College in 2017, Ronnie worked for 12 years at Oklahoma’s largest non profit career college group in numerous aspects of administration, student life, and college culture.
Ronnie has experience in various aspects in career, vocational, and technical education, including admissions, career services, financial aid, compliance, accreditation, strategic planning, default aversion strategies, security and safety, faculty development, human resources, and institutional effectiveness. He is very engaging with both employees and students and has been recognized and received awards for his inspiring leadership and unwavering service to others.
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma; Ronnie is married and has a son. He volunteers for multiple organizations and is a contributing member of his community. Ronnie attended a small Christian High School and attended community college at Tulsa Community College earning an Associates Degree. His Bachelor’s Degree was issued to him by Northeastern State University in Political Science and a minor in Management. He also holds a Masters Degree in Administrative Leadership from the University of Oklahoma. Ronnie has worked consistently; while attending school and managing a family. This is the reason why Ronnie empathizes and relates well to the special populations and adult learners at the college.
Ronnie enjoys politics, music, bicycle riding, mma, and community events.
Kendall Garner is the Director of Financial Aid at Jenks Beauty College. Prior to joining the team of Jenks Beauty College in 2018, she was the Business Office Manager at another college in the beauty industry. She received her Associate’s Degree in Psychology/Sociology and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Arkansas. She has a passion for education and takes great pride in assisting others with pursuing a higher education.
Kendall enjoys spending time with her family, reading, going to concerts and traveling. She also volunteers in her free time at a local pet rescue.
Kimberly James is a Master Educator at Jenks Beauty College with 9 years of experience in the beauty industry. She graduated from Clary Sage College in 2011 with a Cosmetology certification and again in 2019 with a Master Educator certification.
She has 2 gorgeous girls named Kailyn and Kennedy. Kimberly has always had a dream of becoming a Master Educator because she loves to help stylists become all that they can be.

A memory that has always stuck with me is handing brush rollers to my grandma before I could even walk. Seeing her connection with her clients, I understood that she was transform people inside and out. It was so powerful to me; an art! I wanted to be just like her. I’ve worked in the field of cosmetology for as long as I have memories. My eye has always been drawn to style and fashion and I have pursued that passion through many venues. As an educator, I have held my Master Cosmetology Instructor licence for over 25 years and have prior experience of instruction at Western Area Technology Center. I studied Education and Chemistry from the University of Oklahoma and University of Central Oklahoma; graduating with a degree in elementary education. I have taught early childhood/elementary education in four private schools. As a stylist, I have held managing stylist positions at 5 salons throughout the state of Oklahoma, while I am currently hold a position as a colourist here in Tulsa. I have also worked with many haircolor brands within their education department, specialising with the Framesi color family for over 10 years and have preformed on stage with many styling product companies throughout the United States. As an entrepreneur, I have owned a personal stylist business for over 15 years and am presently a managing personal stylist at J. Crew in my spare time. Tarina Foster is Director of Education with 30 years of cosmetology experience and 10 years instructional experience. She holds an Associates Degree in Occupational studies along with countless certifications in business. Prior to joining the Jenks Beauty College team, she was the Cosmetology Program Director for Virginia College in Tulsa for 6 years.
She is also not only trained and certified in Pivot Point, but is also a Career Compass Certified Professional trainer. Maria Cunningham is a JBC Master Educator graduate. She has been a licensed cosmetologist since 2011. The Cosmetology and Esthetics industry is something she has been passionate about for many years. Maria now wishes to share her many years of experience and knowledge with her students as well as learn new things with them. She hopes to not only educate, but also create an excitement through the learning experience. She will not only prepare students for their license exam but also help them acquire other special skills that will help them thrive in the modern salon and spa industry.
Erica Watkins is the PM Esthetics Instructor at Jenks Beauty College. She started in the industry as an esthetician in 2014. In 2016, she added full cosmetology and in 2017, master instructor to her license. Making people feel great about themselves is the best part of her job. She loves to stay on top of the latest trends and does as much continuing education as possible. Erica has experience in spa management and specializes in esthetics, particularly full body waxing and lash extensions in addition to results-driven skincare. Erica spent over 10 years in the Army National Guard, serving one combat tour to Afghanistan.
Her favorite part of teaching is helping students master practical skills that will make them stand above the competition in the industry. Erica will earn her Bachelors of Science in Sociology in the Spring of 2019, but plans to stay in the industry. Erica had a baby in January of 2018 and spends most of her time as a stay at home mother, but she has a licensed home spa where she takes clients part-time. Erica also plays rugby for the Tulsa Women’s Rugby Club and loves spending time with family and friends.
Leonda Clements, is the Director of Financial Aid at Jenks Beauty College. Leonda brings with her 30+ years’ experience in the finance field, with expertise in financial aid, student account management, financial literacy as well as default management, veteran education benefits as well as customer service.
Leonda holds a Bachelor of Science, Business Administration as well as a Masters in Science Management both from Southern Nazarene University. With a passion for education and the believe education can and does change your life, she works closely with our students to show just how affordable college can be while encouraging smart borrowing. She has shared her passion with other as an Adjunct instructor in Accounting, Business Math and Financial Literacy
Passionate about Veteran issues she currently serves on the Board of Oklahoma Veterans Coordinators and Counselors (OAVCC) and has for the past 5 years. In addition; Leonda brings eight years as School Certifying Official for VA Education benefits to Jenks Beauty College along with her hands on approach assisting our veterans and their families in navigating the VA Education system.
Leonda and her husband Darrin of 29 years have one son Chance, who is currently pursuing his Masters from Southern Nazarene University while working in his dream career: Defensive Line Coach at Sterling College. Leonda is active in her church, serves on the Missions Council and teaches an adult Sunday school class loves to bake and is currently learning to quilt. She is also the mother to three fur babies Achilles, Bella Blu (both Heelers) and Shelby (a Chihuahua).
Allison McClung is a master instructor with Jenks Beauty College. She has been in the cosmetology industry for thirty-five years. What Allison enjoy most about teaching is helping students be the best version of themselves. Preparing students for their next chapter is a passion of Allison’s. Men’s haircuts and engaging new students in theory is among her favorite things about being in the classroom. When Allison isn’t teaching she likes gardening and spending time with her five grandchildren.
Shay Ryan is the Jenks Beauty College Dir. of Education. Shay has proudly been in the beauty industry for 25 years. Shay is the owner of a Rustic Elegance Salon & Spa located in The Farm Shopping Center. Shay’s passion is within her students. “Seeing them build confidence and having light-bulb moments is what it’s all about.” I love our industry because it allows us to be free. Free to explore all avenues of creativity. We have the opportunity to never stop learning. While not serving our students. Shay enjoys spending time with family and friends.
Tonya Pettit is a native Oklahoman from Muskogee. This “Okie from Muskogee” has a sincere passion watching students succeed while identifying the gifts that they have. Tonya got her start in higher education working in Financial Aid beginning in 2008. It’s her personal mission to teach students how affordable college really is and educating students on how to be financially responsible. Tonya’s family has strong ties to the cosmetology industry. Tonya is a third generation cosmetology school graduate. On the side, she is an avid baker and treats maker for special events. In her home life, she is a proud mom of an amazing son that is working on his Ph.D. and is also an award-winning bodybuilder.
Liane Daniel is a Master Instructor at Jenks Beauty College. She was born in Germany and graduated from Beauty College in 1982 in her hometown of Schweinfurt. Liane was active in her salon business for nearly a decade and earned multiple accolades including “Multiply International Hair Competitions” in which she received 1st and 2nd Place in Haircutting and Up-Do’s.
In 1991 she relocated to the United States with her two children. When she moved to Tulsa she returned to higher education and continued her cosmetology and teaching education and in 2004 earned a diploma as a Master Instructor. Liane is also specialized in Esthetics. Liane has been in her current position since 2008 and loves sharing her vast experience, passion, and knowledge as an educator to the students of Jenks Beauty College.
Rhonda Williams is Jenks Beauty College’s Managing Master Instructor. Rhonda has devoted her entire adult life advocating for the cosmetology field and serving students. A Sapulpa native, Rhonda has been married to her high-school sweetheart for over forty years. Rhonda has one daughter that is also a member of the beauty industry. Rhonda has been employed and serving students at Jenks Beauty College for thirty years, and even more in the field at large.
In 2004, Rhonda was chosen as the OPSCA instructor of the year. In 2016, Rhonda was voted as the Styles Unlimited instructor of the year. Rhonda is an expert in numerous aspects of the cosmetology profession including nail technology, precision cutting, and color theory. Rhonda has a love for teaching and a passion for changing lives.
Evelyn Phipps is Jenks Beauty College’s Master Instructor for the evening program. Evelyn prides herself on being student success focused and outcomes driven. She is continuously evolving based upon student needs and industry trends. Evelyn is a proud alumnus of Jenks Beauty College herself, and makes a diligent effort to instill the same level of academic and creative satisfaction she experienced as a student. Evelyn specializes in fantasy hair colors, nail design, and makeup artistry. When Evelyn is not serving her students, she enjoys spending time with her five children and husband.
